It’s an austerity Budget for Māori providers

Budget 2025 essentially represents a funding cut for hauora Māori services.

The new spending listed in Vote Health does not feature a single initiative targeted at Māori healthcare or health equity.

While funding for Hauora Māori healthcare under Health New Zealand Te Whatu Ora has increased from $749 million to almost $773 million, its share of the agency’s total spending has dropped from 3 per cent to 2 per cent.

The Government’s overview of Vote Health says the allocation “is limited to developing, implementing and delivering hauora Māori services, supporting the development of hauora Māori providers, developing partnerships with iwi, commissioning kaupapa Māori services and other services developed for Māori, and other related services”.
